Medical Support Orders
Our agency is required by law to provide medical support enforcement services when an application for child support enforcement services is received.
California law requires either or both parents to provide health insurance coverage (medical, dental, and vision) for their dependent child(ren) if it is available at a reasonable cost. If health insurance is available through an employer or other group health insurance, it is presumed to be "available at reasonable cost” if the cost does not exceed 50% of the obligor parent’s disposable earnings. The National Medical Support Notice (NMSN) is issued to notify the employer of the requirement to provide health insurance coverage for the child(ren) in a child support case and to deduct the cost of the plan from the wages of the employee.
Beginning, January 2014, Californians will begin to see the benefits of the Affordable Care Act. Coverered California will ensure that millions have access to affordable, high quality, health care coverage. Open enrollment for health care insurance begins October 1st, 2013.
